Contributions That Cancel

For five passage sleeps after Sable's greeting, the moon grew from a missing pixel into a dark bite in the dust ahead. Then Mara began the radiator roll for final approach. Tala strapped herself into the starboard bridge station before thrust ended. The next carrier packet arrived as Vela turned her patched port wing toward open cold.

The star moved across the bridge in bright bands, disappeared behind the hull, and returned.

Once each roll, a loose galley line touched the bulkhead. The crew had lived with its tap long enough to count it as part of passage.

The transmitted model joined one calibration source to a detector by two routes. They belonged to the calculation rather than the microwave packet carrying it. Each route contributed a signed value at the shared destination; neither value was itself a probability.

The diagram filled a leaf of the Common Book. Former crews had embellished it with waves, directional arrows, and two canals. Sana laid blank paper over every addition.

"The canals had character," Mara said.

"They import fluid behavior," Sana replied.

"I had no intention of drinking from it."

They began with arithmetic before allowing a picture to choose the story.

Tala entered two equal positive contributions.

Alternatives arriving at one modeled destination added their contributions before the calculation produced an outcome weight.

The first pair reinforced. Mara announced the sum ahead of the display and accepted credit for arithmetic. With both signs negative, the total reversed direction while preserving magnitude.

-1/2 + -1/2 = -1

Mara distrusted the negative result because no detector delivered a debt of one event.

"Negative arrivals would simplify traffic ledgers," she said.

Osei accepted her physical objection and rejected the accounting. These values were contributions rather than observed counts. Their signed sum preceded the magnitude used for probability.

The third case reversed one contribution.

At the detector, the sum vanished.

Osei verified the checksum and began with ordinary faults: closed route, bad source, discarded negative value. Every part remained present in the calculation.

Equal magnitudes of opposing sign met at the destination and canceled. The modeled routes had not disappeared.

Sana placed all four sign combinations together.

Turning both signs together preserved squared magnitude. Turning one changed their relation and canceled the destination. The observable prediction depended on relative sign rather than their shared direction.

Each route carried timing lineage from Sable's original navigation clocks. Their keepers had once resolved disagreement by walking sealed oscillators through the moon's tunnels. Modern comparisons traveled through newer machinery, though maintenance speech still called the event a meeting.

The Common Book called the relation between those signs phase. For now, two phases were enough: positive and negative. Other angles would come later. Drawing the whole complex plane now would make notation look like explanation.

Ordinary probabilities could not reproduce the signed sum. Both probabilities would be nonnegative, so addition could never make two equal positive alternatives cancel to zero.

The calculation required signed contributions first, their sum at each common destination, and magnitude afterward. The next instrument record would name those contributions as amplitudes.

Osei rebuilt the rows on a diagnostic pane and concealed their results. Mara finished reinforcing sums first. Sana wrote every sign before squaring. Tala carried a minus from one row into the next and missed the final cancellation.

Osei revealed the correct column in silence.

"You may acknowledge the error," Tala said.

"Resetting the panel has better predictive value."

They repeated the table while a radiator seam flashed copper light through the cabin.

By the final row, Tala had stopped treating a modeled path as an unobserved private history.

The diagram specified how modeled alternatives contributed. It asserted no hidden route choice, duplicate particle, or message between paths. A named preparation and experiment determined whether its arithmetic predicted a physical observation.

Sable first registered as a missing patch in the system's bright dust. Settlement had begun with navigation clocks. Their keepers stayed because comparison demanded maintenance, and maintenance acquired families and law.

Radiation storms drove the camps underground after erasing three years of exposed work. The charter houses later withdrew, leaving machines, debts, and pressure shells in separate legal accounts. The cooperative inherited the tunnels, the obligations it judged honest, the language of meetings, and a suspicion of anything advertised as permanent.

The far instrument opened its receiving aperture. Towers emerged one by one from the moon's darkness as interruptions in the stars behind them.

The habitation signal followed: sufficient water, stable pressure, five residents, one visitor berth, no uncontained illness.

The target declaration named a physical system, two distinguished measurement outcomes, and controlled preparation. Iona Vale, keeper of the instrument, attached one sentence.

Osei read ahead while Tala verified identity. Iona still placed instructions where another person might put a greeting. His hand covered the unanswered bearing packet for a moment and then returned to the console.
