No manufacturer admitted to printing the original volume. Its oldest paper came from a mill that had closed before the Vela was laid down, while its newest annotations referred to systems installed during the voyage itself. The binding had been repaired in three ports with three incompatible ideas about permanence.
On the flyleaf, beneath a list of former owners, someone had written the manual's governing rule.

The courier Vela leaves the turning habitats of Catenary for an instrument built in the dark orbit of Sable. Its crew carries a calibration deadline, a field manual with no accepted author, and several incompatible ideas about what it means for a machine or a person to return. At the Archive, a whole culture has mistaken retention for restoration. At the far instrument, an answer no larger than three depends on physical systems that cannot be copied, inspected, or reversed like ordinary records.
Thirty-seven days later, home is visible and the braking window is closing. Vela is in the right place. Its workspace is not restored, its result lineage is broken, and the mission checker refuses the burn. Tala can repair the claim only by following every distinction the voyage forced the crew to earn.
The field manual opened at the moment the ordinary word return failed.
